One conflict in the Hobbit was when the dwarfs were stuck in a tree. Below them there were hungry wolves and angry goblins. This is a character against character conflict. Tolkien keeps the story going be adding many problems and solutions like when Nori scolded Dori for leaving Bilbo at the bottom of the tree and Dori climbed down the tree to get him (110). Then Gandolf took pine cones and set them on fire. He threw them down at the wolves and some ran away (113). Then the goblins set fire to the trees. Tolkien continues the story by having eagles save them and carry them away from the fiery trees. (117)
Good conflict! Tolkien does keep the story going with many conflicts. This was one he really worked some magic. So many of you chose it to write about. The conflict includes all the details you are referring to with Dori not getting Bilbo up the tree etc. It is the total of this whole scene that is the conflict. Does that make sense? You could have just cited the page where this conflict gets rolling. Good effort. I would love to work a little more on putting your voice into a response. I only hear a summary of what happened. I don't hear what you (Kevin) felt when he read this.
